Cardiac Bioelectric Activity: Modeling and Computational Aspects

Abstract: We will consider a mathematical model, at a cellular level, of the bioelectric activity of the heart. In the first part of the talk we will present a mathematical derivation of the macroscopic model , called ``Bidomain'', from a periodic cellular assembling of the tissue. The Bidomain model, describing at a macroscopic level the propagation of the cardiac action potential in the anisotropic tissue, consists in a degenerate reaction-diffusion system. The simulation of the reaction-diffusion problem, in 3-dimensional geometry with twisted anisotropy, exhibits considerable numerical difficulties and complexity in order to cover all the cardiac electrodynamics behaviors. We briefly describe some relaxed approaches: the eikonal-curvature equation describing the motion of the excitation wavefronts and the Monodomain models. In the second part of the seminar, we will present some numerical simulations with both the Bidomain and Monodomain models in three dimensions. The simulations are based either on a) a parallel solver with adaptivity only in time or b) a Kardos solver with adaptivity in both space and time. An entire QT interval of a normal heartbeat, from excitation to repolarization, is simulated on cartesian slabs or ellipsoidal portions of the left ventricles. Reentry phenomena with periodic scroll waves, figure-8 and chaotic breakup will be presented.
