Cascadic thin film dewetting: experiment and simulation
Abstract:
Recently, Herminghaus, Jacobs, and Seemann succeeded to
determine quantitatively the effective interface potential of thin
liquid
film systems. Their data were used as an input for a dimensionalized
version of
the thin film equation, and precise simulations of complex dewetting
scenarios became achievable for the first time. In such a way, insight
in
dominant dewetting mechanisms was gained which allowed to predict
novel dewetting morphologies. In this talk, we will sketch the modeling
aspects and we will compare experimental and numerical results with
each
other. The main emphasis, however, will be on the special features of
entropy
consistent finite element schemes for the thin film equation which is
fourth order degenerate parabolic. A subtle discretization of the
arising
nonlinearities turns out to be the key ingredient to guarantee
efficiency,
convergence, and preservation of non-negativity.
