Efficient finite volume methods for convection dominated flow in porous media

Abstract: In this talk we focus on the efficient simulation of contaminant transport, including biodegradation, within a single or two-phase flow regime. Using the IMPES formulation for the two phase flow equation both flow regimes can be treated in the same numerical framework. We discretise the equations by an operator splitting technique where the flow equation is approximated by Raviart--Thomas mixed finite elements and the saturation equation by vertex centered finite volume methods. The flow equations are coupled to the contaminant transport equations via the Darcy velocity. For the discretization of the transport equations also a vertex centered finite volume method is used. Efficiency of the overall algorithm is obtained by using higher order reconstructions within the finite volume scheme and adaption in space and time. The adaptivity is based on a rigorous a posteriori error estimate for finite volume approximations of so called weakly coupled systems.
