On the correction of equilibrium of the model state after data assimilation
procedure
Abstract:
A method for the correction of velocities and other unobserved model values
after temperature-salinity data assimilation is considered. The method is
based on the spectral numerical solution of the linearised system of
two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with Boussinesq approximation.
The method is applied to the GFDL/NOAA ocean circulation model MOM_3 to
correct perturbations caused by a ssimilation of vertical temperature profiles
from the PIRATA database. The data assimilation technique used in the present
study is based on the application of the Fokker-Planck equation.
Several numerical experiments have been performed in the tropical
Atlantic. The results showed that the method is able to correct the
velocities fields smoothening unrealistic wave patterns due to
assimilation. Future developments and
applications of the method to geophysical research are also
discussed.
