Adaptive finite elements with large aspect ratio aim to reduce the number of vertices, given a prescribed level of accuracy. Adaptive finite elements with large aspect ratio have proved to be very efficient in the presence of internal or boundary layers: free surface flows, flows around aircrafts, microfluidics.
The classical, isotropic, finite element theory needs to be revisited to account for finite elements with large aspect ratio. I will focus on residual based, anisotropic a posteriori error estimates for the Laplace equation. Extension to evolution problems, parabolic and hyperbolic, will also be discussed.
