Abstract: A number of iterative and multigrid methods will be presented in this talk for large scale finite element algebraic systems arising from the discretization of partial differential equations on general unstructured grids. For self-adjoint boundary value problems, several multigrid strategies will be briefly reviewed and a new agglomeration multigrid method will be adressed in some details. For convection-diffusion problems, a class of two-grid methods will be discussed for reducing the problems to self-adjoint problems and also for parallelization. If time allows, convection dominated problems will also be discussed with a new monotone finite element scheme and a so-called cross-wind-block iterative technique. Both theoretical analysis and numerical examples will be reported.
