climateprediction.net: Climate Modelling Using Publicly Distributed Computers

Abstract: The climateprediction.net project (CPDN) uses public-resource distributed computing on machines located around the world, similar to the seminal project SETI@Home. CPDN calculate large ensembles of runs using the UK Met Office's atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (AOGCMs). This is required to explore the parameter space and uncertainty in climate models and get a better prediction of the future climate. This talk will give an overview of the project, some initial results from the first few thousand runs, and discuss current and future plans, such as the recent move to SETI@Home's BOINC infrastructure for distributed computing.
