DUNE --- The Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment

Abstract: DUNE is a new framework for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Its most important properties are:

i) It defines interfaces for various components of the numerical solution process such as grids and solvers.
ii) It allows the reuse of existing codes: Alberta and UG are two well known packages that are available as grid components in DUNE.
iii) Efficiency is achieved through consequent use of generic programming techniques.
iv) Parallelism is supported through a flexible data partitioning model.

In this talk the interfaces for the grid and linear algebra components are examined in more detail. In particular we describe in an abstract way the kind of grids that are supported by the interface. Numerical examples illustrating the flexibility and the efficiency of the approach are presented.
