Temporal Parallelization for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:

I will discuss a strategy for the parallelization of numerical methods for partial differential equations in the temporal direction intended to be combined with existing spatial parallelization codes. The method presented iteratively improves the solution on each time slice by applying deferred correction sweeps to a hierarchy of spatial and temporal discretizations. Coarse resolution problems are formulated using a time-space analog of the full approximation scheme. Connections to the parareal algorithm and space-time multigrid methods will be discussed, and the parallel efficiency and speedup for PDEs in one, two and three dimensions will be presented.
