Numerical Model of a Thermoacoustic Refrigerator

Abstract: In its simplest form, a thermoacoustic refrigerator consists of a resonance tube that house a stack of parallel plates and heat exchangers. By exciting a standing wave within the resonance tube, a temperature difference develops across the stack, thereby enabling heat exchange between two reservoirs. The basic principle behind this phenomenon is the so-called thermoacoustic effect which generally refers to interaction between sound and heat. This talk will start with a brief exposition of basic results relevant to thermoacoustics, outline the motivation and challenges facing thermoacoustic refrigerators, and then discuss results of a simplified computational model of a thermoacoustic refrigerator.
