On Multilevel Bases for Divergence-Free Finite Elements

Abstract: The talk covers two related subjects. We review an algebraic multilevel factorization method for the gradient discretization matrix B in a Stokes-type system which has recently been proposed by Samir and Sameh for large-scale particulate flow problems. We show its relationship to previous research on multilevel preconditioning of divergence-free elements by using nonconforming P1-P0 elements on a hierarchical sequence of 2D-triangulations as an example. For the triangular Taylor-Hood elements, local bases of divergence-free functions are derived, together with a preconditioning scheme.
