Approximation and the numerical realization of contact problems with Coulomb friction

Abstract: In the first part of the talk existence results to the continuos setting of this problem will be revisited. The approximation will be based on the so-called reciprocal variational formulation,i.e. the formulation in terms contact stresses. This formulation seems to be very attractive from the numerical point of view. Contact problems involving Coulomb friction will be numerically realized by using the fixed point method combined with an alternating direction type algorithm used in the reciprocal formulation. A mathematical justification of this approach as well as numerical examples will be shown. Some links to optimal shape design problems will be mentioned.
