A unified approach to meteorological modelling based on multiple scales asymptotics

Abstract:

A large collection of simplified equations for atmospheric flows is accessible from the full 3D compressible flow equations through a single asymptotic distinguished limit for the Rossby, Froude, and Mach numbers and a systematic multiple scales ansatz. This presentation first provides explicit evidence that this is in fact the case. Then we discuss offsprings of this approach in the construction of `well balanced' numerical methods and in a new theory for multiple scales interactions in near-equational flows.

The lecture is based on recent joint work with N. Botta (PIK), Ann Almgren (Lawrence Berkeley Lab), and A.J. Majda (Courant Inst.).
