Simulating Rare Events with Transition Path Sampling
Abstract:
Many interesting processes occurring in condensed matter systems are
characterized by the presence of widely different time scales
complicating the study of such processes with computer simulations.
Transition path sampling is a computational methodology to overcome this
problem. Based upon a statistical mechanics of trajectory space, it
provides a perspective with which time dependent phenomena can be
examined with the same types of importance sampling tools that have in
the past been applied to static equilibrium properties. In this seminar I
will review the concepts and methods of transition path sampling and
illustrate them with several examples.
