Model reduction in various coarsening processes in materials science

Abstract: Coarsening, that is the increase of typical length scales in a microstructure, plays a crucial role in the aging of materials. Two paradigms are Ostwald Ripening in a two phase mixture and grain growth in a polycrystalline material. We are interested in deriving macroscopic models which capture the essential features of the dynamics. However, even though both processes are driven by the reduction of a surface energy, the microscopic interactions are quite different. We compare for the two model examples several approaches to derive reduced models and discuss their validity.
