Instabilities of Stewartson Layers and Taylor Columns

Abstract:

I begin by presenting a numerical solution based on spherical harmonics of the Navier-Stokes equation in a spherical shell geometry. Particular attention is focused on the Coriolis force, and the possibility of treating it implicitly. This code is then used to compute the Stewartson layer, a type of shear layer that exists in rapidly rotating systems. For sufficiently large differential rotation between the inner and outer spheres this shear layer yields non-axisymmetric instabilities. Finally, the inclusion of a stable density stratification reduces the Stewartson layer to a Taylor column, whose instabilities are also studied.
