Adaptive Multigrid Methods
for Local and Nonlocal Phase Field Models
of Solder Alloys

Thermomechanically induced stress accompanied by progressive demixing
of solder alloys is one of the most prominent sources for the failure
of joints and corresponding electronic devices.
The aim of this project is to contribute to the development of a
new generation of lead-free solders by numerical modelling of such
phase separation processes.
Phase field models such as Cahn-Hilliard or Cahn-Larché equations
provide a well-established framework for the mathematical description
of phase separation on the meso scale.
We focus both on the development of fast and reliable solvers for
Cahn-Larché equations with classical local interaction terms
and on the numerical analysis of recent non-local counterparts.
